Latest From OnsideKick Who are the early fantasy football winners and losers?
The moving and shaking continues at a furious pace but some clear fantasy football winners and losers are beginning to merge. Here's The Fantasy Guy's take on the recent free agency frenzy.
Winners
QB TONY ROMO, COWBOYS - Romo is a guy that might be forgot about just enough on draft day to become an incredible value. The Cowboys certainly did some house cleaning right out of the gate and I think it’s for the better. Barber’s running style caught up with him, Roy Williams has lost several steps, and Leonard Davis is past his prime. Romo isn’t going to be as cluttered with guys wanting the ball and he still has a dominant young tandem out wide.
RB KNOWSHON MORENO, BRONCOS - Everyday I am liking him more and more. Just days ago there was talk of him maybe not being the go-to guy in Denver as they were looking to bring in some help. Well, the winds calmed and the Broncos wound up with Willis McGahee, a well-known touchdown vulture, but a guy with plenty of mileage. I thinkMoreno will stave off the competition and could very well have a solid year.
WR CHAD OCHOCINCO, PATRIOTS - Winner winner, chicken dinner! You can’t help but love 85. I mean seriously if you think about it, what is there not to like. Throw in Tom Brady, you gotta think this is a match made in heaven. While you can’t realistically expect a Randy Moss type of rebirth, Ochocinco could be a very valuable asset in this offense. It‘s a win for New Englanders as well, as they also receive Evelyn Lozada.
WR LARRY FITZGERALD, CARDINALS - You have to appreciate what the Cards have been able to do in this short off-season thus far. They traded for Kevin Kolb, signed veteran Todd Heap, and have attempted to get some extra help on the line. They’ve been busier than a New York Subway during rush hour and they aren’t done. They may have lost Breaston to KC, but Braylon Edwards is in their sites. Look for Fitz to get plenty of targets in 2011.
WR PERCY HARVIN, VIKINGS - Harvin is the man in Minnesota this year with Sidney Rice departing to Seattle. Here’s a guy who had 70/800/5 roughly last season which keeps him around the top 20 area. He was often banged up and went through several different QBs. The addition of Donovan McNabb brings in a veteran QB who will be able to at least move the ball and - as electric as Harvin is - why not? Honestly, this might be your breakout wide receiver for 2011.
Losers
QB TIM TEBOW, BRONCOS - As it stands, things don’t look so bright for Timmy. The Broncos couldn’t quite get a deal done with Kyle Orton, meaning he is sticking around for the time being. Word has it out of camp that he is running with the rst team as well. Tebow was on my radar as a late round steal at the QB position with the potential to have some huge weeks, but right now he's just too big of a question mark.
RB PEYTON HILLIS, BROWNS - One of the breakout fantasy MVPs of 2010 might be headed for more of a committee in 2011. Remember, Montario Hardesty - last year’s draft pick - is back and they also signed Brandon Jackson as a threat to catch passes out of the backeld. I don’t expect the same numbers here for Hillis. The guy is a beast, but it seems a bit risky for me.
RB, JONATHAN STEWART, CAR - The guy was on everybody’s radar to have the breakout season that player’s like him were expected to have after a few years in the league. However, with the resigning of DeAngelo Williams, that has all but gone by the wayside. I have invested my time in J-Stew since he left Eugene, but it’s time to lose the baggage. I’m sorry J, but you just aren’t for me anymore.
WR SIDNEY RICE, SEAHAWKS - Sid the Kid had a breakout campaign in 2009, but it was the Hall of Famer Brett Favre who made it all happen. I’ve always considered Rice as a mid-tier wideout in this league and unless he falls into the late rounds, he is not even close to my radar. He is familiar with Travaris Jackson who also signed with Seattle, but what has he ever done? It might sound right, but it’s not for me.
WR JORDY NELSON, PACKERS - This is a late entry to the OnsideKick Fantasy Daft Kit (coming soon!) as I was completely in love with this guy a couple weeks ago. However, as soon as James Jones was resigned that went out the window. I’m not saying Nelson won’t have some solid games and he should be in that 2 spot after his playoff performance, but with Finley back as well there are just too many options in Green Bay.
